DM 2120 Image Processing

Catalog Description: Adobe Photoshop is an industry-based image-manipulation processing program. The designer, illustrator, or fine artist can use the program as a paint, prepress, color correction, and darkroom system. Numerous image effects are possible after black and white or color images have been scanned and/or electronically created. Prerequisite: Digital Image Making

Objective:

To discover how meaning can be created and manipulated in a visual culture.

To examine the effects of digitization on the visual.

To create meaning-full visual works.

To build a foundation of techniques in the areas of selection, image manipulation, color corection, layering, masking, and filter usage.

To understand the digital image as both a social and cultural object.

Consideration will be given to preparing documents for use in printed and electronic media.

Ancillary Objectives:

To derive an approach to common problems of digital imaging.

To understand the use and application of PhotoShop.

To understand optimization potential ofdifferent file formats.

To acquire good work habits, problem solving abilities, and image preparation skills.

To achieve technical proficiency in image derivation tools and techniques, and master the lexicon of terms surrounding visual theory and commonly used media.
