// Project 3

Problem 3. Walnuts, Wal-Mart, and Packages

Students work in pairs to investigate the visual and structural nature of packages.

Part 1. The team will gather packaging samples in order to study their structural and visual characteristics. Carefully document via drawings and photographs the various fabrication elements such as, planes, folds, scores, tabs, and interlocking systems. It is critically important that packaging is studied in context. For example, visit Wal-Mart and document, the ways in which packaged items are displayed,
stacked, and stored on shelves.

Part 2. Design container prototypes for 6 walnuts in the shell using only lightweight paper and card stock. The package should not display any identifying graphics but its form should reveal what is contained. The packages should also be designed for easy stacking and storing. At least three similar prototypes are required to demonstrate stacking principles. The goal of this project is to increase awareness of the form and content issues faced by three-dimensional designers. Students are evaluated in terms of innovative thinking, involvement, team interaction, and presentation.
